Groundbreaking Ceremony Heralds Beginning of Terre Haute Children's Museum Building Project

December 5, 2007, Terre Haute, IN -- Ground was broken today at the corner of 8th and Wabash for the new Terre Haute Children's Museum. Representatives from the museum's board of directors, the City of Terre Haute, and children of the community participated in the ceremony.

John Thompson, president of the museum board, said, "Four years ago when the idea for a new Children's Museum was taking shape, a viable downtown option did not exist. In collaborating with Dora Brothers Hospitality Corp.'s rehabilitation of the Tribune Building, we have the opportunity to be part of the resurgence of Downtown Terre Haute."

Planning for a new science and technology museum for the area's children has been ongoing for more than three years, and almost $4,000,000 has been raised for the building's development. The transfer of property for the museum from Dora Brothers was finalized last month, clearing the way for the groundbreaking.

The new Terre Haute Children's Museum will occupy approximately 23,000 square feet on the first three floors of a new structure being built adjacent to the Tribune Building. The rehabilitated Tribune Building and the new floors above the museum will be the Candlewood Extended Stay Suites. The museum will have entrances on the south, east and west sides of the building, with its Science Store having a retail storefront on Wabash Avenue.

Steve Schrohe, a member of the museum's board of directors, announced the kick-off of the Brick Campaign to raise additional funds toward the museum's goal. "By sponsoring a brick, available in three sizes, you support the building of the new museum financially, and your name, a loved one's name, your family's name, or your business's name then becomes a permanent part of the outside wall of the museum," Schrohe said.
Thompson emphasized that the corner of 8th and Wabash will become a location that area children will look forward to visiting, with the museum's traditional exhibits and many additional unique and exciting interactive learning opportunities that they will want to come back to over and over again.

The museum is scheduled to open in early 2009.

Future Museum
.

Indiana desires to become the state of choice for growing up, raising families and working in good paying jobs. To achieve this goal, we must provide the best education to our youth and ensure a high quality of life in our communities. Science education has become a priority in Indiana's quest to become a high tech and scientific leader.

The new Terre Haute Children's Museum will fill this role by providing a rich environment for children to explore, test and create while nourishing their inquisitiveness, encouraging participatory learning and inspiring attitudes and career choices. The Museum will serve as a key component of science education for teachers and students, providing experiences with direct curriculum connections and offering a dramatic, engaging environment with resources and exhibits far beyond those available in a traditional classroom.
